Welcome to Circling: HomeWork — the miniature issue in which we stop in to share what is helping us in our homes in real time. We are fascinated by the minutiae and logistics behind the scenes in domestic life — the unseen scaffolding that makes our outward creative work possible. In HomeWork, we pause and notice those supports. What do we eat, what do we wear, what do we use to clean our homes, what are the faithful objects we reach for in our own lives?

Today, we’re dipping into our never-fail groceries. We both fall into a hazy middle around home cooking - we do it, but not religiously. More specifically, we do it, but not at the expense of other creative work. In the world of the Instagram lifestyle influencer and the cooking blogger (Substacker?) it is easy to feel shamed when our dinners are not particularly pretty, not the least bit cottage-core, and even sometimes - dare we say? - mostly store bought.
