Welcome to the third installment of Circling: HomeWork, where we (Krystiana and Lynnette) take a look around our own lives to share two objects making art a little more possible in the everyday. Inspired by Ahna’s discussion of healthcare in last week’s artist feature, we’re each sharing a non-prescription item that helps us to care for our physical health and tend to recurring points of pain and discomfort. Chronic pain or illness, mental and physical health, caretaking, and disability are so far-reaching in their impact on the ways in which a person makes art, from the time (and quality of time) they have to do it to the physical processes and tools used to create. There’s so much to consider here when it comes to structures of healthcare (or lack thereof) and the way it’s intertwined with money, communal approaches to care, and the ways the art world is so often centered around one kind of body and mind, inaccessible to others.
