I’m taking a page from our artist-feature book, and sharing the objects that have been helping our home be one in which art survives over the past month. All of these have something to do with repetition—a habitual setting to begin the day, a recipe I’ve cooked half a dozen times over the winter, a book that holds up to re-reading.
Lamp
Our apartment’s overhead lights are efficient but overbearingly bright. This new-to-us wooden lamp base, found secondhand and combined with the shade from our former table lamp makes hanging out, drawing, reading, etc. in the morning or evening hours so much more pleasant.
Drawing Pad
Since I haven’t been making it over to the studio as much as I’d like lately, I have been keeping drawing pens and a smaller drawing pad at home. This has allowed me to work on drawings when I have some time in between things, want to decompress, or while listening to a podcast or with a TV show on in the background. I’m also not putting any expectation on what these drawings are or if I consider them finished. It’s all very low pressure and just for fun. When I was a kid I would just draw all the time, “for” nothing! I want to be that way still.
