Santa Fe Diary
Circling HomeWork #42
A couple weeks ago, I packed up and headed west for a weeklong residency in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was my first time in the state, second artist residency1, and fell one month after I wrapped up my day job at the museum. As my day job ended, I jumped immediately into our final two weeks’ push to get ready for Art x Care, and then worked a wedding doing day-of coordination the following weekend. This week away afforded me time for long days in the studio and space to pause and reflect a bit on this liminal moment I’m in.
Jen Tough Gallery runs the residency and awarded me a funded spot to attend, which is really what made this trip possible.
Pre-trip packing
After reading this exchange between Jade Chang and Ann Friedman, I thought I’d share my packing list with you as well. Making visual art requires stuff, but I opted to keep things as streamlined as possible on that front: working small (drawing pads that can be packed into a carry-on), and with a limited range of materials. This kept me from needing to check a bag, and the constraint actually felt good once I arrived and settled in. For a relatively short trip, I really didn’t need a ton of choices of what to work on in the studio.
